Are we never to know peace? Gigi Hadid, a woman so famously beautiful that she has the power to repopularize even the most regrettable style trends of yore, has been seen on the streets of New York City in skinny light-wash denim capri pants. This is the latest in a long line of styles from the early ’00s that Hadid has been wearing lately, against her millennial elders’ better judgment.
With cuffs reaching just below the knee, front seams, and impractically small front pockets, Hadid’s pedal pushers couldn’t look any more circa 2002 if they tried. Actually, I take that back. Because Hadid actually styled these pants with two additional fashion relics of the George W. Bush era: the small square handbag and pointed-toe ballet flats. If her chunky chain necklaces had been silver instead of yellow gold, we’d have had a hat trick.
Other early-aughts trends the elder Hadid has been (at least partially) responsible for reviving include ultra-low-rise jeans, which millennials have been fighting tooth and nail for nearly a decade now, and the teeny, tiny going-out top, made iconic when worn by Keira Knightley in 2003. In 2016, Hadid reminded everyone of fashion’s pashmina era, and in 2022, she resurrected the hot stoner girl look once ubiquitous at Warped Tour. Heck, the Hadids have even helped bring back the capital-S supermodel.
Look, Gigi Hadid can wear whatever she wants, obviously. I’d just like to remind her of one lesson I myself learned in the ’00s: With great power comes great responsibility.
