Leave it to Bella Hadid to hit the Cannes Film Festival red carpet (the Croisette, for those in the know) in the most dramatic dress imaginable. Not because it’s an avant-garde style, though the model has certainly worn her fair share of those. No, this time she’s in black vintage Versace, in a gown that was literally sewn for a diva.
The NFT entrepreneur arrived in the South of France on May 24 for the premiere of French film L’innocent. For the occasion, she chose a black strapless column gown with a sash around the hips, matching black heels, and diamond jewelry. Her hair was slicked back and her eyeliner dramatic, somewhere between a wing tip and The Julia Fox.
The dress was designed by Gianni Versace himself, per Yahoo! Life, for Austrian opera singer Helga Dernesch for a performance of Salome at the famous Teatro alla Scala in Milan, in 1987. (Here’s Dernesch in the dress; unfortunately she’s almost completely in shadow.)
Of course, we’d expect nothing less from Hadid, who wore one of the most stunning looks at last year’s Cannes as well: a black dress with an ornate Elsa Schiaparelli breastplate of trompe l’oeil lungs.
In addition to having a flair for the dramatic, Bella Hadid has been big into black lately, fully representing for the goth girls at the 2022 Met Gala, where she wore a caped Burberry ensemble that we could honestly see on any Alto. For the after party, she combined nipple pasties, a corset, Marie Antoinette-style sleeves, fishnets, stockings, a woven bag, and strappy sandals to create an outfit that can only be described as So Much Look, So Little Fabric. She doesn’t miss!
And she’s not the only A-lister to make a statement. The 2022 Cannes Film Festival red carpet has provided us with a bevy of looks, most of them single-color. Not a ton of patterns this year, though we are seeing volume, dramatic silhouettes, and lots and lots of jewels. Take a look at some of the other gorgeous gowns here.
