Spanish Club Invites Guest Speaker to Discuss Indigenous Issues in the Americas

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University welcomed guest speaker Jodi Rave Ortiz of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas Program at UCLAs to speak about her research on indigenous language revitalization in the Americas. The lecture was hosted by the university’s Spanish Club at the Mershon Center on Wednesday evening. Rave Ortiz, who is an enrolled member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and an assistant professor of American Indian studies and linguistics at UCLA, researches political activism, language education, and food sovereignty in Native communities. Her most recent research has been primarily focused on the Tohono O’odham language. One of the main points that Rave Ortiz discussed was the importance of indigenous languages. She said that indigenous languages are not just a means of communication, but they are also a way of preserving culture and identity. .
